For security professional, I am amazed at how many accidents occur because people are unwilling to take precautions to protect themselves. The same people who wear UV protective clothing when they go swimming or spend much time in the sun will forget to wear safety clothing when they are on the job.
Maybe because these protective clothings are not fashionable!
Many people believe that Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) clothing is ridiculous . They do not consider that it saves lives. The irony is that the new ones are much more likely to wear protective clothing as their more experienced colleagues. Even if they are more vulnerable to accidents than experienced workers, these newcomers are less at risk of death or serious injury because of the protection of clothes they wear!
Once the workers had more experience in their jobs, they tend to remove protective clothing, either because they are uncomfortable, or because it is considered excessive. Sometimes it is just a matter of macho attitude – the desire to show by taking risks. Nevertheless without protective clothing, you can easily become a victim of what might otherwise be a danger of error.
It is disconcerting how many places I have seen people leaving their protective clothing. Some of the greatest trained professionals know that I leave laboratory clothing when going into a chemical laboratory. I saw chemists who work with dangerous chemicals while refusing even to wear gloves! These will be most needed, such as chemical protective clothing masks. When it comes to gloves, they will trust their own ability to stop something potentially deadly spread on the hands.
This is nonsense as far as I’m concerned. Protective clothing is not expensive and, furthermore, it is often supplied by the workplace. Although protective clothing at work are only in 5% of cases, it would still be 5% less risk of accidental death. It seems worth a little discomfort for me!
I became so fed up with the situation that I started doing public service announcements on the importance of the apparel industry. It is tragic to see, again and again, good people who die because of a mere lapse of judgment. I feel like if people knew the importance of protective clothing and was reminded about this more often, they will begin to wear them.
